HCM — heart muscle disease
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most common feline heart disease and is documented in Birmans. In this breed a genetic test covers only part of the picture. That is why the parents of our breeding cats were examined by cardiac ultrasound with a cardiologist, as the breeding rules require.
PKD — polycystic kidney disease
Reliably detectable by genetic test. We breed exclusively with cats that have tested negative.
FeLV and FIV
Feline leukaemia and feline immunodeficiency virus are ruled out in both parents before every mating.
Blood group
Birmans occur in blood groups A and B. Mating a group A male with a group B female can be fatal for the kittens. We therefore know the blood group of both parents before mating.
Vaccination and deworming
Cat flu and feline panleukopenia are given as a first vaccination; the second dose follows after the kitten has moved out. Deworming is repeated according to the vet's schedule.
Diet
We feed high-quality wet food with a high meat content and no added sugar. Kittens leave with a feeding recommendation so that a change of diet does not coincide with the move.
